It is a time to bring in more light, love, and laughter. In nature the plants are blossoming with flowers. Moving forward the days are going into their descent into darkness. - 7 Types of Rest
Which rest combination do you need to wake up revitalized? Each of us should get as much rest as we need to be refreshed and recharged for all the days of the week. But what is rest? And what type of rest do we really need? When I think of rest, I usually think of sleep. Sleep is physical rest which is necessary for our health, growth, and well-being. The symptoms of not getting enough sleep are detrimental to our health. According to Sleep Foundation Org, symptoms of sleep deprivation include: Slowed thinking Reduced attention span Worsened memory Poor decision-making Lack of energy Mood changes "When I am resting because my body is weak, I need to remember that I'm not wasting the day doing nothing. I am doing exactly what I need to do. I'm recovering." - Author Unknown We know physical rest is essential to restore your body and mind. But there are different types of rest which are useful at different times. By understanding the seven different types identified here, you can help yourself to get the right combination of rest to get you energized, alert, and revitalized. What type of rest are you in need of today? Dr Saundra Dalton Smith author of Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity has come up with seven types of rest. Come explore what each type looks like in practice and how you can make small changes that will lead to a more restful life. 1. Physical Rest Includes sleeping and napping. Six to eight hours of uninterrupted rest per night is the ideal. One thing I like to do to ensure restful sleep is to do my nighttime routine. It includes making a sleepy time herbal blend cup of tea, taking a shower, turning off every light, adjusting the temperature, and putting in my ear plugs. 2. Mental Rest Is about cutting down on multi-tasking. It turns out the brain can only do one thing at a time. We think we are multitasking but in fact we are only changing our attention quickly. Lately, I am working on stopping the multitasking mentality and focusing on doing one thing at a time. Whenever I feel frazzled, I take a deep breath, sometimes I will reach out for my anxiety soother tincture, and focus on what is important and productive. 3. Sensory Rest Make it a point to make time for peace and quiet. Set aside a time to turn off screens and maybe get outside in a natural space, or in a cozy corner to think and journal. It can also be about putting in some ear plugs and closing your eyes for a few moments just to get yourself centered and reset. 4. Creative Rest Take some time to allow yourself to appreciate beauty in nature or near where you live. It can also be experiencing the creativity of others by going to a museum or art gallery. It turns out that doing/making art projects is creative work not creative rest. Creative rest helps to inspire you to be solve problems and challenges with creative and unexpected solutions. 5. Emotional Rest Emotional Rest is about being authentic and accepting your feelings. It takes a lot of energy to express emotions you don't really feel. However, it may not be appropriate to discuss with your clients how bad business is going, or to discuss family issues at a work meeting. If this is happening turn to a trusted friend, family member, or confidant. It that won't work, get yourself a therapist, life coach, or mentor. 6. Spiritual Rest Is about connecting to the sense of meaning and belonging to something greater than yourself. For some, it has to do with religion or faith. For others it is about being or feeling like an integral part of a community, cause, or work culture. Get centered and consider how you are contributing to the bigger picture and that will put your spirit to rest. 7. Social Rest Is about spending quality time with people who nourish and uplift your energy. Take a look around and consider the people you spend time with, if they have expectations or bring you into a negative spiral you may need to take a focused break from them. Seek out the company of family, friends, or even a group you are a part of. You will know you experienced social rest when you feel energized, uplifted, and joyful. Feeling refreshed and recharged is of utmost of importance to our physical and mental health. If you are feeling tired after a long night's sleep make sometime to find the key to your ideal rest combination.

At the Leo waxing moon the focus changed to creativity, self promotion, and fun. Now that the full moon is in Sagittarius our focus turns to long distance travel, freedom, and education. What does freedom mean to you? For me, thinking about Freedom through this Taurus Moonth lens reminds me of the importance of wealth management and personal resources. Without the proper resources traveling and pursing higher education would be a huge challenge. It is one of the reasons why I have a full time corporate job which feels confining at times. But it's what funds my adventures and spiritual growth projects. It's finding the balance between the demands of work and the joys of personal growth that gives me the freedom to pursue what matters most to me. For me, freedom isn't just about doing whatever I want whenever I want, but about making choices that align with my deeper values (Taurus) and aspirations (Aries). The Sagittarius full moon invites you to celebrate your sense of adventure and freedom. The tools of the time are inspiration and passion. Review Your Sagittarius New Moon Intentions The Sagittarius New Moon was on December 12th 2023. Did you set intentions at the Sagittarius new moon back in December 2023? If you didn't, think about what you were up to in the end of November. If you can't remember (that was six months ago!) go into your calendar or do a search on your phone to see the pictures you took around that time to jog your memory. If you did, go to your notes and review your intentions, goals, or wishes. Have any of them come to fruition? Yes? Great! You are focused on what you want. No? do you still want to work on that? Is it aligned with what you want now? If not, let it go, throw it into the fire. Walking away from things is totally okay. It is one way of getting clear about what we want in our lives. If yes, take a moment to breathe in some fresh energy to your power center and call on the initiating and assertive energy of Aries. Imagine how manifesting those intentions will make you feel. - Vision Board
How is your year going? Have you made resolutions or goals? Most people do and then forget it about them. This year I'm working with visual resolutions on a vision board. What is a Vision Board? A collection of images, words, and phrases that represent the actions you want to take, the person you want to be, and the things you want to have in your life. It serves as a daily reminder of your heart's desires. I made my first vision board around 2013. I cut pictures and words out of magazines and glued them to a piece of cardboard. It was fun to make and my goal was to make it look nice with things I liked and wanted (Chanel bag I'm still waiting). One of things I put on the first vision board was a cruise ship and I unexpectedly ended up on a mediterranean cruise later that year. It wasn't until about year after the cruise that vision board resurfaced from its hiding place and I was startled to see the cruise ship in the center of the board. Realizing wow, this really works. The second attempt at making a vision board in 2015 was a little more focused. I wanted to tap into my purpose and passions and get my finances in order. I included a picture of someone in downward dog position with a caption "Affirm your life's purpose in downward facing dog." In 2016, on a whim, signed up for Rina Jakubowicz Yoga, Life, and Happiness weekend course at Kripalu and one of the techniques she used was affirmations during yoga. I ended that year with a Yoga Teacher 100 hour Certification. I didn’t even know Yoga could be combined with affirmations. Six years since I made my last vision board and I felt drawn to make another. This time the universe was driving me to make one. A friend mentioned she was making one for the new year sparking my interest, then my daughter said she was going to make a vision board, and finally life coach and tarot reader Dina Berrin hosted a class about creating a clear and empowering vision for one's life. She talked us through the 8 life zones which are very similar to the 8 pillars of wellness I wrote about last month. She also guided us to think about how we want to feel in the future. I think visioning what one will look like in the future is very powerful. I see myself living authentically and with integrity. I also see myself as an entrepreneur, playing it big, designing my future, very versatile, and setting goals. Above is the vision board I started last week and while it is beautiful (tooting my own horn) and it has intention behind it I'm realizing that if I really want to manifest, nuture the talent within, set goals, etc I have to do more than just see the words on the board. The next step in making what I put into my vision board into a reality is actually setting SMART Goals for all the words and phrases. Otherwise I will only manifest one or two things on the board instead of all the things. And I want all the things! It is important to get clear otherwise what comes through will be clouded. So, now my vision board is somewhat complete and the journaling and envisioning is what comes next. I suspect it will be be a work in progress. Perhaps I will make another next year, time will tell. So... you want to make your own vision board? I suggest you set aside a 3-5 hours. Get a a couple of friends to join you. Put on some joyful music and have lots of fun. Materials you will need: Poster board Glue stick Pens and Markers Magazines Printouts from internet Scissors Intention Goals Vision Check out this blog post about how to make a vision board in detail. Let me know if you've made a vision board. Did you manifest what you put on it?
